Foster children and youth in every state have legal rights! Although foster youth in every state have legal rights, it is not always easy to find out what your rights are. This webpage is a collection of rights for foster youth by state. The goal is to make it easy for all foster youth to know their rights while in care.

There are several ways states can make it easier for you to find and know your rights:
• Grouping all of the rights of foster youth into one section of the state law. This is often referred to as a Bill of Rights
• Compiling a list of foster youth rights in the state and creating a brochure, poster, or handbook

Below are links to PDFs of the rights of foster youth in many states and links to the original websites. As the rights of other states are identified they will be added here. Please contact FYA (info@fosteryouthaction.org or 415.694.7385) if you have additional resources on foster youth rights that you’d like posted for your state or if you notice any errors.
